Pinterest Video Formats Explained: 1080p, 720p, HLS & MP4
A deep dive into video compression standards used by Pinterest, including H.264, AAC audio, and adaptive bitrate streaming.
Key Takeaways
- Pinterest encodes videos in multiple renditions: V_720P, V_EXP7, and HLS .m3u8.
- MP4 container with H.264 video codec offers universal playback across all operating systems.
- SaveVault selects the highest progressive MP4 rendition for seamless local playback.
Behind the scenes, Pinterest uses sophisticated cloud video transcoding to balance bandwidth consumption with image sharpness.
When creators upload video content, Pinterest generates multiple bitrate profiles: progressive MP4 versions at 720p and 1080p, as well as adaptive HLS playlists for mobile streaming.
For offline saving, progressive MP4 files are vastly superior because they contain self-contained moov atoms and audio-video streams that play smoothly in any offline media player.
